Technically speaking it's not so much an MMO - at least not in the usual sense of the name - but rather a virtual world created by the userbase and governed by Linden.
It's like the most ridiculously enriched and complex 3d chatroom in the world.
I wish I could run it. I used to have this Internet connection with download / upload contraints. And now that I don't have them, I have this crappy old computer. ^^
You really need to have fast internet and a powerful computer to run Second Life, of you'll spend most of your time staring at walls without textures, and humans represented by question marks, generic bodies, or whatever it's using to display avatars that haven't been downloaded yet.

I logged on to Second Life using Windows XP and a newer model Dell PC computer and tower. The about description is an accurate account of what I experienced. Unless you are running military or FBI grade hardware and software, what is said above is reason enough NOT TO join Second Life, IMO.
Everything that I have learned about living my life to it's very fullest, and cosplaying my female form at it's very fullest, came from reading Shoujo manga and watching Shoujo anime!

never tried second life but i sure wish they had a game where you could create a completely custom character with skill sets that you can customize the same way and be able to do virtually anything you want.
Tried the superhero game "Champions" and sadly it was somewhat underwhelming in the powers department with only the most common powers and certain powers requiring spending extra real world money to get the better ones unlocked.....
No Shapeshifitng powers either...
